The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons is issuing a call for proposals to conduct research on nuclear weapons with a view to support nuclear disarmament activism and support underfunded research on nuclear disarmament. ICAN will consider a broad range of research topics, including but not limited to: normative approaches to nuclear weapons, including legal approaches such as the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons; nuclear weapons and injustice; nuclear weapons and production of knowledge and the political economy of nuclear weapons.
Research grants will range from 5’000-10’000 CHF for a period of up to 12 months and can cover a range of research and publication activities, including fieldwork, archival research or researchers’ time to analyze previously collected data and submit an academic article in a peer-reviewed scholarly journal. As appropriate, ICAN may provide small stipends to travel to present at Second Meeting of States Parties of the TPNW, which will take place in New York the week of 27 November 2023. Projects should begin by May 2023 and conclude by May 2024, but may begin or conclude earlier. Grant recipients will submit a report of activities and outcomes at the conclusion of the grant period. Within the year or after the project is finished, ICAN social media and digital staff will collaborate with researchers to share their work with the public.
This application is open to researchers with a range of education and experience based in universities, think tanks and civil society organisations or independent researchers. Researchers without experience submitting a peer-reviewed academic journal article may be paired with a more senior scholar to provide mentorship and guidance on the process. Applicants from historically marginalised communities are particularly encouraged to apply, including people of colour, from Indigenous Nations and other communities disproportionately harmed by nuclear weapons, those who identify as LGBQTI+SB, as women or non-binary, and applicants with disabilities.
